Every publisher works from somewhere. Even when a book deals with questions that cross countries, institutions and historical periods, what first appears important begins in very concrete relationships.
Fóscolo & Company is edited in Belo Horizonte. Archives, universities, libraries, movement through the city, Pampulha and conversations taking place here form part of the repertoire through which books are read and prepared.
This does not mean turning the city into compulsory scenery or publishing only about Minas Gerais. It means giving up the fiction of a neutral point of view. Editorial choices have a geography too.
Circulation moves in the opposite direction: a book can leave a place without remaining trapped by it. It may reach another city, institution or language and meet questions that did not exist at the table where it began.
Saying where the work is made does not reduce a publisher’s reach. It makes visible the point from which it chooses to look.
